Places Of Interest For Seniors Living In Rhode Island
Rhode Island has attractions that are interesting for people of all ages and has played an interesting role in the history of our country. Here are some ideas of things that senior citizens living in Rhode Island may enjoy:
- The Breakers located in Newport, Rhode Island. This is one of, if not the grandest, Newports summer cottages. It was purchased by Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilts grandson, Cornelius Vanderbilt II who was Chairman and President of the New York Central Railroad system in 1885. He purchased a wooden house called The Breakers in 1885 and in 1893 he hired architect Richard Morris Hunt to design a villa to replace the wooden house that had burned down. Hunt hired a team of craftsmen and artisans and created a 70 room Italian Renaissance-style palazzo inspired by the 16th century palaces of Genoa and Turin.
The mansion has a gross area of 125,339 square feet and 62,482 square feet of living areas on five floors.
The Breakers is the most-visited attraction in Rhode Island and is open year-round.
It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1994, and designated a National Historic Landmark District Contributing Property in 1972.
The house is a 45-room mansion and the gardens surrounding it include rare and unusual plants, specimen trees, a greenhouse, and stonework.
Continuing Care Retirement Communities
Many seniors prefer to choose a community that will continue to meet their needs in the future. Continuing care retirement communities have independent living, assisted living, and nursing home facilities on the same property or owned by the same community. This model allows seniors to stay near their friends in familiar surroundings, even as their needs change. The care provided in the assisted living section of a CCRC is the same as in an assisted living community. The difference is that residents can easily move to a skilled nursing room if required. Often, CCRCs are bigger than ACHs, as they encompass more care options.

Rhode Island is the smallest state in the U.S., making it easy to reside in one of the quaint seaside towns while staying close to Providence, the major metropolitan area, or vice versa. The state is also near the Northeastern hubs like New York City or Boston. These reasons, among others, explain why Rhode Island is a destination for a growing elderly population. More than 217,000 residents are aged 60 or older, which is approximately 20% of the states population. That number is expected to jump 75% to more than 264,000 by 2040.

Providing Connection And Hope
JERI staff members visit Jewish residents in nursing homes throughout the state of Rhode Island, as well as those in other living situations. At any given time, JERI staff and volunteers may be conducting Shabbat services, Passover Seders, or one of a variety of programs in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. JERI also provides training for staff at senior living facilities to help them understand the traditions that mean so much to our Jewish seniors.
The focal point of the programs is not to dwell on what seniors have lost, but to enhance what they still have. JERI provides not only social and cultural connection but also spiritual support that can help seniors find hope and strength.
Psalm 71:9 best describes the philosophy of the JERI program: Do not cast me aside when I am old when my strength has come to an end , do not desert me.

Providence, Rhode Island, is a large coastal city and the home of Brown University. Many seniors, numbering around 18,000 of the citys population, enjoy strolling along paved walking trails or visiting the waterfront. The weather in summer is balmy with breezes from the Atlantic Ocean, which seniors sensitive to high heat may enjoy. To meet new friends, develop creative hobbies or attend group fitness classes, Providence has many Senior Centers for retirees.
The crime rates in Providence are quite high, especially property crimes, something for seniors to consider when exploring the community. However, Providence has a much lower cost of living than many other nearby cities, such as Boston and Washington,DC. Money saved on the necessities may be spent at one of the area malls, or in the smaller shops that dot downtown. This lower cost of living in Providence isnt quite reflected in the citys average assisted living fees, however.
According to the 2018 Genworth Cost of Care Survey, prices for a private, one-bedroom apartment average $4,900 in the city, compared to the state median of $4,350 forcomparable living arrangements. Some senior living communities may be more or less, depending on the amenities they offer.

Violations And Resident Protection
While Rhode Island does provide an updated and searchable list of assisted living communities online, they do not post inspections, complaints, survey results or violations online. They do provide information about special licensing for care but do not provide information about capacity limits, payment types, contact information nor the price of care.
Rhode Island conducts inspections annually and can fine communities for non-compliance.
Levels Of Assisted Living Licenses

Basic services
Unlike a nursing home, an assisted living community is not a skilled nursing facility. The basic level of assisted living is designed to be the senior’s home but a more secure and social environment that can provide meals and services. Some communities around the state have skilled nursing facilities as an extension of the community to help make transitions during senior years simple and less stressful.
Special care / Memory care services
Many communities around the state may have either a memory care wing or are entirely dedicated to memory care. These communities include all of the services provided in regular assisted living, but daily life is focused around the need of residents with Alzheimer’s or some form of dementia. Communities with memory care options also provide the comfort of smoothly transitioning while aging in place, should memory care become necessary.
Limited health services
Some communities around the state have acquired the limited health services license. This allows the community to provide more nursing services by appropriately trained clinical staff. While hospice services are welcome at assisted living residences, communities with this license can care for residents on hospice that become bed bound.
Additional Licenses
Some, but not all, assisted living residences are licensed to centrally store and administer medications.
