Veterans Aid and Attendance and Housebound Pension Benefits

Veterans and their survivors who are eligible for the VA pension and are housebound or need daily assistance due to a disability may be eligible for a pension top-up through the Aid and Attendance and Housebound program. This benefit may also be available to veterans who meet the criteria but do not currently qualify for a VA pension due to a high income.

To qualify for the Aid and Attendance benefit, seniors must meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Require daily assistance with daily living activities such as dressing, bathing, eating, toileting or managing a prosthesis
  • Reside in a nursing home to receive care for a physical or mental impairment
  • Be bedridden
  • Have vision tested at 5/200 or worse when wearing corrective lenses or have a visual field of 5 or fewer degrees

To qualify for the Housebound allowance, applicants must have a permanent disability that confines them to their place of residence. Note that disabilities do not need to be service-related, and applicants may only receive one of these benefits.

For more information on the Aid and Attendance and Housebound program, contact the Los Angeles Vet Center at 767-1221 or the Los Angeles County Veterans Service Center at Patriotic Hall by calling 452-8387.

Mental And Physical Activity Every Day

Your parents ability to truly thrive may come down to the amount of daily stimulation and engagement in their life. Most senior living in Los Angeles offer cognitive therapy sessions involving music, nature, and pets.

Many facilities also have a variety of scheduled programs to keep residents stimulated and socializing. These activities may include music and dance, movie nights, art classes, book clubs, game nights, bake sales, and even live entertainment.

Helpful Programs For Senior Living/assisted Living In Los Angeles

The California Department of Aging has special programs that cater to the needs of seniors with disabilities or generally needing care. This care extends to seniors living in Los Angeles. The department takes charge of the funds allocated to them as contained in the Older Californians Act, the federal Older Americans Act in association with the Medi-Cal program.

This department does not only offer care to seniors in California, they also help in getting employment for the elderly people in California that are still capable of working. And for those of them who are not disabled, but are seniors, CDA helps them to live as independently as they want in an environment they have known all their lives.

The City of Los Angeles Department of Aging is charged with the responsibility of ensuring that these seniors receive the highest quality care to help them live a healthy life while mingling with the community. They offer in-home assistance and services that help out frail seniors with household tasks. In the area of care management, they also have a plan designed to help seniors with health and social needs.

Preserving Independence While Providing Senior Care

At any age, independent living gives us self-confidence and a sense of well-being that are critical to our quality of life. For this reason, you may have tried to care for your elder in their own home.

At-home care is often preferred by aging individuals, but it can be expensive. Even if you can devote yourself to around-the-clock care for your parent, it may not be ideal. You may be doing physically and emotionally demanding work without sufficient breaks, which can reduce the quality of the time you spend together.

Senior living communities in Los Angeles can give you and your loved one the best of both worlds. They can enjoy self-sufficient living knowing that care is available when needed, giving you both time to relax and enjoy each others company.
