Financial Assistance For Assisted Living In Cleveland

Some Cleveland area facilities accept payments from one or both of the state’s financial assistance programs for seniors living in an assisted living community. The Assisted Living Waiver is part of the state’s Medicaid program. It helps cover the costs of personal care services for seniors residing in an assisted living facility. Also, seniors who qualify for SSI payments might also qualify for supplemental SSI payments from the state. You can apply for both of these programs through the Cuyahoga County Department of Job and Family Services.

Getting Ready To Move To Assisted Living In Cleveland

If you or your senior loved one have reached the conclusion that residential assisted living is the right choice, there are a few steps to take before you’re ready to start the move. The first step for most seniors is a medical examination. This can be done by your doctor, or it may be done by a specialist in age-related health issues. The doctor should check for injuries and illnesses that could get in the way of a move to an assisted living community, and you might get a written opinion that assisted living is the appropriate level of care for you or your loved one, as opposed to skilled nursing or post-op rehab.

Next, it’s time to think about financing and what to do with a lifetime’s worth of personal property. This stage can take a long time, so don’t rush yourself. Search for the best community in the Cleveland area â and remember everyone’s needs are different, so there’s no single “best” place in town. Consider moving furniture and other possessions into storage to keep them safe during and after the move. Seniors moving into assisted living often sell their homes to ease the bump to the budget a move like this might represent.

I How Memory Care Facilities Can Help

According to the Alzheimers Association, 83% of all caregivers are unpaid family members, relatives, or other friends, and nearly half of all care is for older adults with some form of dementia. Caregiving, especially when it involves Alzheimers or dementia, is extremely exhausting and time-consuming, leading many caregivers to feel isolated and overwhelmed.

As a loved one continues to progress through the stages of dementia and his or her cognitive abilities continue to decline, behavioral problems, safety, and general care often become more than one caregiver can handle. This is when its important to find extra help, and residential facilities that have specialized memory care programs are often the best solution.

In addition to providing a safe environment, memory care programs seek to delay or halt cognitive decline while providing the opportunity for a social, independent lifestyle.

Larchwood Village Residents In Cleveland’s West Park Will Not Have To Move For Project

Portions of the Larchwood Village independent living apartments on Rocky River Drive in West Park will be renovated into assisted living units.

CLEVELAND Dozens of residents of Larchwood Village Retirement Community in the West Park neighborhood won’t have to make plans to move out of their apartments and out of the neighborhood, as originally feared.

Larchwood Village officials said no residents are being forced out of their independent living apartments as facility owner Saber Healthcare Group renovates parts of the complex into assisted living units. Instead, a spokesman for Saber said that reasonable accommodations are being made for residents.

However, the scare exposed something that community officials have known for a long time the West Side, and especially West Park, has a shortage of senior housing.

Larchwood Village Administrator Geoff Byrne met with residents April 30 to inform them that Saber Healthcare Group will not be forcing out occupants of independent living apartments. The facility renovations will allow it to achieve various medical certifications, he said.

Larchwood Village has several buildings, most of which offer skilled nursing facilities, including a new building that opened in 2008. Only a small part of the complex offers independent living about 30 units, said Gregory Nicoluzakis, attorney for Saber Healthcare.

See Why Residents And Families Love Judson Park

Living in Cleveland: Eastside or Westside?

William F.

My Mother and Father-in-law both had recent stays at Judson Health Center. Mom went through rehab for a hip fracture and Dad for post acute-care following a surgical procedure. Some of that time they were at Judson simultaneously! The care they both received was simply excellent. The attention to their medical needs as well as their emotional needs during an uncomfortable time enabled them and the entire family to rest assured that they were in the best place possible. We are very thankful that we have such a wonderful resource for our loved ones.

Leonard W.

My mother is a resident at Judson. Having worked in this industry as a facilities director, I have seen the good and not so good. Judson sets the standard of how a nursing home should operate! It is not just a nursing facility where my mom resides, it is now her home! I would highly recommend Judson to anyone looking for a caring place to have their loved one live out a NEW life!!

Kristina K.

My mother moved to Judson Park a few years ago from her home in Cleveland Heights, and what a wonderful experience it has been! For my mom, who had been widowed for 10 years, its been a chance to meet new people, and to have new companions to dine with at the Community Table each evening. Its been a chance to enjoy the convivial happy hours at the end of each week, and to take in a piano recital or art lecture.

Whats The Difference Between Assisted Living Vs Other Senior Care Types

Assisted living is separate from other types of senior care as in it sits directly inbetween independent living and skilled nursing facilities, also known as nursing homes.

  • Independent living communities, for those who want to downsize but don’t need help with ADLs.
  • Continuing retirement care, combined facilities that offer a range of services from independent living through all grades of assisted living and more, for those who may need access to multiple forms of support as they age.
  • Memory care is typically reserved for seniors with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and other neurological issues.
  • Seniors recovering from surgery, or who have been through illness or a slip-and-fall accident, often choose to spend time in skilled nursing and rehab facilities, where physical therapists are on staff to help speed their recovery.
  • Hospice care focuses on comfort and pain management for critically ill people.
