U.S. News & World Reports annual ratings of the best nursing homes in the country include 19 on Long Island. Just under 3,000 nursing homes in the country earned the designation of being a U.S. News Best Nursing Home for 2019-20.
Homes were given an overall rating, a rating for short-term rehabilitation care and a new rating this year that evaluates long-term care.
This year, we introduced a long-term care rating, Zach Adams, a senior health data analyst at U.S. News, told Patch. This is for people who need ongoing daily assistance in stuff like health-related and personal care.

During my tour of the facility, my questions were met with very strange and inconceivable answers that didnt mesh. The woman who took me on this tour was more interested in selling the facilitys aesthetics rather than what it had to offer. If any of my questions were answered by her, I dont believe that they done so truthfully. All in all, I have a very bad feeling about this place.

To compare the different costs of Senior Care Communities, we’re going to look at three different levels of care:
Independent Living
On Long Island, you can expect to pay between $4,000 – $8,000 per month to reside in an Independent Living community.
This fee includes rent and two or three delicious, restaurant style meals in the community’s formal dining room, a full slate of activities each day, great company, and professional staff to provide overall supervision of seniors.
Most other services, such as housekeeping and laundry services are supplied, generally, as part of the rental cost.
Assisted Living
The costs for Assisted Living are broken up into two main parts:
Rent: Rent covers the apartment cost, all meals and snacks, housekeeping, laundry, and a full slate of activities. There is often an allowance within the Rent cost for very basic care – perhaps 3-5 hours per week.
Care: As a resident needs more assistance with the Activities of Daily Living , a separate Care charge will be incurred. This cost is for help with dressing, bathing, ambulation, and other things we all must do every day. Communities typically charge for these activities at a care level, not a la carte.
So a resident might have a Rent charge of $6,500 and a Care charge of $1,000 each month. Fees also include three nutritious meals per day cooked by professional chefs, socialization opportunities, games, activities, and other amenities.

Questions To Ask When Looking For Senior Living
Finding an assisted living community, can be overwhelming. Here are some tips on things to be observant of:
- Does the facility have the right atmosphere for your needs?
