Whisper Woods of Smithtown, an assisted living community, has opened and welcomed its first resident.
The $25 million, three-story structure located on 12.6 acres was built with E.W. Howell as general contractor and about 20 subcontractors.
The building at 71 St Johnland Rd., in Smithtown, includes 101 units with 71 for assisted living and 30 rooms set aside for those with memory issues.
This is the first such community in New York opened and operated by Benchmark Senior Living, a Waltham, Mass.-based firm with 57 communities in the Northeast.
The comunity, which can accept up to 136 residents, is expected to employ about 85. It also includes a rooftop terrace with wine bar.

Whisper Woods of Smithtown is amazing. They are absolutely fantastic. I’m very proud and lucky this is where my loved one calls home. The staff goes above and beyond in everything they do. I’ve worked in the industry for years and have come across many facilities with poor reputations. I’m so glad we found Whisper Woods, with people who take pride in their work. Every time I’m there, I’m always impressed with how clean it is. My mother loves the food, and she loves the activities they provide. On a daily basis, they offer up to 8 activities. Honestly, I never thought she would participate, but not a day goes by that she doesn’t join in the activities. Of all the places I’ve seen over the years, I can honestly say they are one of the best assisted living facilities I’ve come across.
The staff here is very good. So are the nurses. They’re very busy – they’re shorthanded now, I understand due to Covid. I just wish there were more staff members so they could answer the phone and respond to my calls. But overall, they’ve helped my loved one tremendously. I visited 10 facilities in the area, and I’m happy that I chose Whisper Woods.
